Crystal Green Memorial Scholarship

Blood Assurance is dedicated to serving the needs of each community in which we have the privilege of living and participating each and every day in giving the gift of life. This scholarship fund is dedicated to Crystal Green who was a valiant and loving young woman that set forth the example of kindness and care to all that she met.

Crystal, who graduated from Dade County High School, was a student at Georgia Southern University before suffering a setback with aplastic anemia. After hundreds of hours of platelet transfusions and a bone marrow transplant, Crystal lost her long battle in November 1998, shortly after turning 21. In her honor, Blood Assurance in 1999 established a scholarship fund for high school students seeking to better themselves and aspiring to give back to the communities from which they came.
The program offers a total of twelve (1) one-year scholarships in the amount of $1,500 each. Scholarship money is paid directly to each student’s college or university for tuition, fees, and other educational expenses as may be required. Based on the institution’s academic schedule, scholarship money will be paid on a semester or quarterly basis. Scholarship applicants will be judged on a written application, high school transcript, school and community service, letters of recommendation, and a marketing plan for a blood drive. Students must attend high school in one of the five states served by Blood Assurance. These include Tennessee, Georgia, Alabama, North Carolina and Virginia. The completed applications must be postmarked or submitted online by March 31st.
Financial need is a consideration, as one of the primary goals is to help a student who might not otherwise be able to make it without the assistance. Applicants who have all educational expenses paid through other scholarships and/or grants are ineligible.

Cord of Courage

Did you know more than 1 in 7 units of blood we receive are donated by high school students? We have a program designed to recognize these students’ lifesaving efforts called the Cord of Courage. Students in participating schools who complete a required number of donations before they graduate receive a special cord to wear at their graduation ceremony and may opt to receive a special edition cord if they go above and beyond.

1/2 Pints 4 Life

1/2 Pints 4 Life is a program designed for elementary and middle school students to learn about, and help promote, blood donations. By encouraging their parents and teachers to donate blood at school blood drives, kids practice community involvement and learn early on the importance of donating blood for patients in need.

Project Lifesaver

Blood Assurance recognizes and rewards our local high schools for their tremendous efforts in saving lives in our communities through Project Lifesaver, our high school drive program.

Originally launched as Project Lifeline, area high schools have hosted hundreds of blood drives contributing thousands of units of blood for the healthcare facilities we serve.
